Bluetit Diary    May 2012 (8)

Tuesday 8th May 2012

Today's the day I thought that Becky's eggs might start to hatch, so I am keeping a closer eye than usual on what's happening in Box1.

So what's happening outside Box1 to make Becky so excited?  Looking at several pictures taken around this time it is clear that there is something outside the box that she is not keen on!

All it is is a male bluetit!  Clearly it is not Bob who would be welcomed as the bringer of food.  Perhaps he is one of the pair that keeps looking at Box3 but never does anything remotely like starting to build a nest there!

Jess still has 6 live chicks and they all appear eager for food.  As she laid 9 eggs, this means that as well as the one accidentally thrown from the nest cup, there must be two others that have died and presumably been removed in the early hours of the morning.

It always seems odd the way some chicks just disappear in the first few days after hatching.  We have seen dead chicks removed by the hen, but usually this must occur early in the morning at first light and before the system is switched on in the morning.

My predicted hatching day may have been accurate for Jess, but it is now getting late and there is no sign of any of Becky's eggs hatching today.

As you can see in this picture taken just after half past 7, none of Becky's eggs have yet hatched.

There's always tomorrow!
