Bluetit Diary    May 2016 (10)

Sunday 15th May, 2016

Before going any further, we had better give names to the birds in Box1.  For reasons I won't go into, the female is Poppy and the male, if he ever turns up, is called Patch.

Today Poppy is continuing to build the nest!

I had rather written off this box because it is very late in the year for a bluetit to lay eggs - but you never know!  If she does produce eggs it will be the latest egg laying that we have had by a considerable margin!

Here she is again - this time with moss which does not show up well against the background of moss already in the box.

By the end of the day, this was the state of the nest.  Still no feathers and no obvious nest cup.  But no sign of the nest box through the bottom of the nest cup either.

The latest date for the start of a bluetit laying eggs in one of our boxes is 25th April.  So if Poppy started laying tomorrow, it would be very late indeed.  I am not optimistic!
