Bluetit Diary    Apr 2019 (23)

Saturday 27th April, 2019

Ann is still incubating like billy-oh.  This is the one job where it is OK to sleep while doing it!

Just to allay my fears, Andy has brought more food to Ann while she incubates.

Back to Box2, this was the sight that greeted me when I switched on first thing.  Clearly most of the eggs hatched overnight, though you can see one that hasn't.  Sometimes several eggs never hatch, so it will be interesting to see whether this one hatches or not.

It looks as though there at least 3 eggs that are still to hatch.

Ben continues to do a great job.

When the chicks are older it will be safe for Bella to leave them so that she can join the hunt for food.  For the first few days, however, she is also needed to keep the chicks warm so has to rely on her partner for most of the chicks' food.

This looks like an enormous LGC (Little Green Caterpillar) to me!

Surely Bella must have chopped it up before feeding it to such young chicks.

They have a voracious appetite though, so perhaps not!

More food from Ben.

Clearly, there is still at least one unhatched egg.

Another morsel of food from Ben.

Mum feeds it to the chicks.

You can clearly see there is still at least one unhatched egg.

It is now after 7pm, and Ben is still working away.

What a good partner he is!
