Bluetit Diary    Apr 2019 (24)

Sunday 28th April, 2019

Perhaps I have been a bit hard on Andy.  Here he is with some food for Ann

All of Ann's 11 eggs are still intact!

Over in Box2, you cannot see any unhatched eggs.  However, if an egg doesn't hatch it soon gets buried in the bottom of the nest owing to the continual churning activity that is life in a nest cup.

Ben feeding Bella and the chicks as usual.

He seems strangely reluctant to let the food go.

Bella quickly recognises what's up and withdraws slightly so that Ben can feed the chicks himself.

Over the years we have often seen males that want to feed their chicks when the female is in the nest box.  Not every time, not even very frequently, just every now and again.  Of course it is highly beneficial for the brood to be able to be fed by the male when the female isn't there as this significantly increases the amount of food that can be brought to the box each day.  With a brood as big as this, that is important.

Bella recognised this immediately.  Perhaps she is an experienced Mum?

Ben doesn't seem to be having much success, so Bella withdraws a little further.

Finally, she moves well away while Ben attempts to feed the chicks.

As usual after a feed, the chick presents a fecal sack for a parent to remove.

They both make a grab for it at the same time (there's conscientiousness for you!)

They both have it!  (It's the thin white thing joining their beaks.)

So they have both ended up with some of the fecal sac.  The joys of parenthood!

Mum eats her bit while Dad flies off to deposit his bit well away from the nest.

I think I can see 10 chicks here.

And again here - though you have to look closely to see the one on the left of the nest cup as it is not showing any yellow gape!
