Bluetit Diary    Jan 2021 (1)

Saturday 2nd January, 2021

This is the first bird I have seen in any box this year!

Another visit. It looks like the same bird.

Sunday 3rd January, 2021

I think this is the same bird as yesterday.

We've still not had a bird go inside Box2, but at least this bird is taking an interest in it!

It looks quite a smart one too. It must be a young bluetit.

Wednesday 6th January, 2021

A swap-over! I thought this was rather early in the season for a swap-over, but when I looked up the records, I found it was fairly common in January! If you want to check, you will have to look at each year's Summary as there is not enough room for this event in the Overview!

In comes the female!

The male was safely tucked away at the edge of the box, so she had plenty of room to land safely - and without landing on him!

She moves to behind him ...

... and straight away, off he goes. Mission accomplished!

He is disappearing fast!

Now she is by herself in the box, she has a good look around.

She even has a look through the drain holes in the floor!  I always wondered why they were necessary - I can't see how much water can get inside the box, even with the fiercest storm.

A few seconds later, she's off!

This is a shot of the female leaving the box.

Well, I think she is leaving.

But no, she swivels around ...

...and pauses to have a good look around outside.

Finally, she takes another look into the box ...

... and then flies off.
