Bluetit Diary    Apr 2007 (5)

Friday 6th April, 2007

The two bluetits that keep on trying to take over Box1 are still around.

The approach today was as is normal - first the male tries to look through the nest box hole to see if Greta is there.

When he is satisfied that the box is empty, he drops down onto the hole for a final check.

If this confirms that the box is empty, then he normally goes inside.

He doesn't always go inside in these circumstances.  Sometimes he flies off again, even if the box is empty.  Whether this is because his partner is not near, or he thinks that Greta is, we do not know!

Anyway, immediately after this picture was taken, he scoots off in a hurry and Greta arrives.  Perhaps he heard her coming, or perhaps his partner gave an alarm call to this effect.

In Box2, Fay is getting well looked after.  Morgan has just come in with something to eat and here Fay is begging for it.

Morgan seems a bit slow for Fay's liking, so she leans forward and grabs it from him!

Morgan then leaves.

After Greta had chased off the bluetit pair last time, she stayed inside the nest box a couple of minutes.  Soon after she had left, though, the male bluetit was back again.  Here the female comes to the hole after the male has entered.

This is the male, crouching down, expecting the female to follow him into the box.

Her procrastination becomes too much for him and her brushes past her on his way out of the box.

She is knocked off her perch as he passes.

It's just as well birds can fly!
