Bluetit Diary    May 2008 (6)

Saturday 10th May, 2008

Because of what happened to both our bluetit broods last year, we have been on tenterhooks all day today.  However, all appears well and both parents are busy feeding the chicks.

There still seems to be at least one unhatched egg left in Sally's nest.

Our worries have so far proved groundless and Joe appears to be bringing in food regularly.

Another delivery.

The first couple of days are critical as the chicks are almost too weak to hold their heads up to beg for food.

Sometimes Joe will try to feed the chicks himself if he comes in when Sally is not there.

Judging by the number of gapes that you see here, the chicks seem fit enough so far.

Sometimes Joe is a little reluctant to pass the caterpillar to Sally to give to the chicks.

But then Sally graciously withdraws slightly so that Joe can feed the chicks himself ...

... or that's the theory!  Clearly no chick took the offering from Joe here!  Perhaps they are all full?

All going well so far, though
