Bluetit Diary    May 2016 (19)

Tuesday 24th May, 2016

Again, in Box1 there are just the seven eggs.

At last!  Poppy has had a visit from Patch.

Another feed from Patch - and only7 minutes after the last one!  That's better!

And another feed from Patch.  Though this time over 6 hours have passed since the last one.  Not so good!

A last feed at the end of the day.  This time it is only an hour since the last one. Only?

Back to Box2.  Hugh is on duty as usual!

All 8 chicks have survived the night.  However, given that at least 18 eggs were laid, this is a disappointingly low number.

Also, since the eggs hatched, we have not seen more that 4 unhatched eggs which leaves at least 6 eggs unaccounted for.

Food for a chick - it looks like a little green caterpillar.

You can see a few of the unhatched eggs here - but certainly not 10 of them!  As the eggs cannot be removed by the parent bluetits, the missing eggs must have hatched and the chicks subsequently died and their bodies removed.  I can think of no other explanation.

Mum (I'm not sure which one!) with the chicks at the end of the day.  I wonder whether she will stay there overnight, or will leave when she has finished feeding them?

Anyway, it has been another successful day for Box2.

Finally, in Box3, there seem to be at least 7 active chicks.

There may be one more as there were 8 eggs laid.  I'm sure we will find out soon enough.
