Bluetit Diary    Apr 2025 (4)

You can just about make out there are now 5 eggs.  I wonder how many she will lay.

My Collins Field Guide says bluetits normally lay between 7 and 12 eggs, sometimes from 5 to 16!  As you can see from the Overview, I've never had any bluetit laying more than 12 eggs, and that has happened only once in 2009.  I consider 10 to be a large clutch!  The clutch sizes reported above this are always the result of two hens laying in the same nest, sometimes co-operatively and sometimes as a result of a second hen ousting one which has already started laying.

I think this is the first time I have seen Max feed Meg.  He seems to have got over his hesitancy of 28th March.

Just as well!

And Meg now has 6 lovely eggs!

A proud mum with her 6 eggs.
